Right to Life’s court battle with the Abortion Supervisory Committee (ASC) began in April this year. They argued that the current law’s protections over unborn children are not being properly followed by the ASC, nor does the current law go far enough in recognising the intrinsic right to life of the unborn child. The current law is based on the ‘born alive’ rule, a rule that only recognises a child as a human being once it has been born alive. This rule underlies the interpretation of the Contraception, Sterilisation and Abortion Act 1997, and therefore, the way abortions are conducted in NZ. In his findings in June, the High Court Judge, Justice Miller, found that the ASC had ‘misinterpreted its functions and powers under the abortion law and that there is reason to doubt the lawfulness of many abortions in NZ...that at the moment in NZ we seem to effectively have abortion on demand, with figures showing that some certifying consultants decline very few or no abortions whatsoever...and that the unborn child has a claim on the conscience of the community. (Maxim Inst) There is likely to be ‘drawn-out scrutiny, with appeals and cross appeals having been lodged with the Court of Appeal in Wellington“ (Times 11.8.08)
Pray for God to intervene and work in a powerful way to bring change to the Contraception, Sterilisation and Abortion Act so our laws line up with His Biblical laws and standards. You could declare aloud -
Ps 19:7-11
The law of the Lord is perfect, converting (restoring) the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them Your servant is warned, and in keeping them there is great reward.
Col 1:15-20
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.
What My Dad Would Think
-
In January of this year, I drove our van into the driveway, slipped it into
park, and burst into tears. They weren’t the silent tears that pool at the
corn...
